Execution Hollow

The Pale Blue Eye

Execution Hollow is the setting for a nighttime encounter in which Augustus Landor finds Randolph Ballinger restraining Edgar Allan Poe. The place becomes more than a point on the grounds: it is where Landor recognizes the immediate danger to Poe and later returns his attention to the scene while weighing the threat.

Setting and Approach

Landor encounters the scene while walking near the ruins of the old Artillery Barracks, with the Plain nearby. At first he notices movement by Execution Hollow but cannot make out what is happening. Raising his lamp and drawing closer, he recognizes that two people are involved. The approach from uncertainty to recognition makes the location the threshold between an indistinct disturbance and a specific danger.

The Encounter

The person restraining the other is Randolph Ballinger, whom Landor recognizes from the cadet mess. Ballinger has pinned Poe down and is applying pressure to his throat. Landor identifies Poe only after circling for a better view, recognizing his distinctive build and the torn shoulder of his cloak. Seeing the disparity between the two men, and judging Ballinger's actions to be deliberate, Landor runs toward them.

The Hollow as a Reminder of Danger

After the encounter, Landor looks back toward Execution Hollow while discussing Ballinger's intentions with Poe. Poe dismisses the possibility that Ballinger meant to kill him; Landor remains unconvinced, saying that from where he stood Ballinger appeared intent on doing so. The return of the location in their conversation preserves the contrast between Poe's confidence and Landor's alarm, and makes the hollow a continuing point of reference for the threat Poe has faced.
